It’s pretty easy to see why cruises have become so popular. You get to see unique, exotic and often exhilarating locales around the world, without leaving the comforts you’re used to, and all on a ship that will be chock full of amenities and activities. One of the most popular destinations is Alaska. With so much in the way of history, natural beauty, scenery and activities, it’s not really a wonder that people flock to it from all over.
Most cruises to Alaska leave from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle or Vancouver. All of them are great cities, but Vancouver is particularly beautiful if you’re not from that area. It’s a great starting point for a great cruise.
Most Alaska cruises will pass through places like Glacier Bay, the Kenai Peninsula, Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. In and around these places are some great excursions, even to places where there’s still something of a gold rush.
There are beautiful rocky, snow-capped mountaintops along the cruise route, along with something you might not expect… rainforest and idyllic islands. Naturally, summer is the time to check these out, which is why the peak season is from May to September.
Anchorage, the Alaska Range, the famous Denali National Park and others nearby are great options to check out. If you want to, you can go find grizzly bears, fish for some of the world’s best salmon, look for gold nuggets, photograph mountain lions or watch eagles soar. You can head into Yukon Territory (Canada) for an even more natural, isolated experience.
And of course, you’ll get a chance to look at what Alaska is possibly most famous for, glaciers. These formations, thousands of years old are just spectacular. They shaped the face of the planet, created the Great Lakes, and changed the direction of life on the planet, and there are many, but almost every Alaska cruise will swing by the Hubbard glacier. A cruise to Alaska is a must, at least once in your life.
