Alaskan Cruise Ship Itineraries

Unless you’re navigating your own ship, there are really only 2 itineraries for an Alaska cruise:

Inside Passage

This is the classic Alaska cruise itinerary. Sailing round-trip from Vancouver, you’ll typically stop at three or four port towns, like Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and either Sitka, Haines, or Victoria, B.C. These cruises usually spend a day in Glacier Bay or another glacier area and 2 days at sea.

 

Gulf of Alaska

These cruises usually sail northbound or southbound between Vancouver and Seward. You’ll likely hit many of the same stops that the Inside Passage cruise does, but because it’s a one-way, you’ll also get to go to Valdez, Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord, or another town in the gulf.

 

So which do you do?If you’re the kind of cruiser who likes to sail right along, taking in the scenery, you’ll probably prefer the Inside Passage, since you’ll have a couple full days doing just that. But if you like getting off the ship to go exploring and want to see more of the state, look into the Gulf of Alaska. Just keep in mind that the Gulf of Alaska is one-way, so you’ll have to get back to your starting point.
