Alaska Cruises, Plan n' Prep

Alaska Luxury Cruises

There’s a school of thought that says if you’re going to do something, do it right.  Go all the way.  Go big or go home.  You get the idea.  So if you’ve chosen to take an Alaska cruise, why not make it a luxury Alaska cruise?

So what exactly makes up a luxury Alaska cruise?  These days, most cruise ships are pretty luxurious, as far as amenities and accommodations are concerned.  So like most hotels in North America and Western Europe, the high end is differentiated from the mainstream mostly by quality of service.

There’s not much lacking in mainstream cruising service levels, with lots of competition, cruise lines have to do all they can to recruit and retain customers.  The difference is how personal the service is.  High-end cruise lines use smaller, more unique ships that often have 100 people or less.  That is a far cry from the megaships used these days, often holding over 6000 passengers (and not even counting the thousands of staff members).  Some of the high-end lines are more discriminating about the passengers, and may not allow children and such.  You will find that if you’re looking for the isolation type of relaxation, that’s what you’ll get on a true high-end luxury Alaska cruise.

Food on the mainstream lines is very good nowadays, also thanks to competition, what you’d find in a  good restaurant.  On a luxury cruise line though, they often have celebrity chefs preparing meals with unique ingredients like wild-caught Alaskan salmon, imported European truffles, etc.  Again, the difference is not from bad to good, but from good to excellent.

To many however, simply taking a cruise on one of the large cruise lines can also be a luxurious experience.  Alaska is a beautiful place, and the picturesque scenery and vistas alone offer a unique experience.  Couple that with decently comfortable staterooms, all-you-can-eat buffets, live events, activities and social meets, and the experience can quickly turn into a perfect getaway.

Most cruises to Alaska today can be considered luxurious, and are separated only in degree of luxury.  You essentially have a choice of a large, social ship with lots of activities, or a small, service-centric ship that lets you bask in isolation.  While it’s up to you to decide which you’re after, one thing you can be certain of is a great destination.
